At the wedding,
everyone was so
and smart
and professional.
They had real careers
and used their
to be warm
and earnest
in a way I’d
never figured out.

I was a co-worker
of the groom,
and knew
one person
at the entire event,
but these strangers
took me in
and made me
one of the family
in a gracious,
effortless way.

We laughed,
but not at anybody,
at wit and charm.

It was all so easy.

Leaving the event,
it struck me how
I wanted to find people
who looked
like my parents
and kill them.
