Land’s End

On the other side
of a couple decades
of insanity,
he spoke with
grim authority
when he told me
some things
should never be
experienced.

Certain things
make the world
go from
black and white
to color
so violently
that the
ordinary world
never quite
looks the same
again.

The shadows
get darker
and deeper,
the brights
washed out.

The breeze
stops blowing
through the branches
of the cardboard trees,
and birds sing
like off-key
animatronics.

Every journey
has a ride home,
and the farther you go…
well,
some things
should never be
experienced.
