Not Quite There

It’s these weird little things
that show me we have
a lot to work on
in this country.

A black family of 7
was entering an elevator,
and so I knew
I was just going to
wait for the next one
because I don’t like
being sandwiched in
like that.

But rather than
just stand there
and say I was going to
wait for the next one,
I patted my pockets like I’d
forgotten something
and walked away,
only to return
once the doors
had closed.

See,
I didn’t want them
to THINK I was being racist,
when I was just
claustrophobic…

It’s a strange relationship,
however you look at it.
