We synchronized
until we thought we’d collide.

It was an illusion
that made the moon
appear as large
as Mars,
that made Mars appear
as close as the moon.

And one smile from Venus
could breathe passion
into a bleak,
dead universe.

So we naively made plans
about a life to come,
ignoring the forces
invisibly pulling us
in separate directions.

We always did this,
as if photographs
could ever last.

These orbits
happen so silently.
The grave gravity
of movement.

I could turn my head
to say goodbye,
but I just let the forces
pull me along
into the faceless abyss.
I can’t stand to witness
this distance.

We’re all in orbit.
