Alabama Night

The moon peers in
like an alabaster sun
in the Alabama night,
my papers scattered before me
in the lunch room.

Desperate conversations on the phone,
she said she felt all alone
but didn’t want to weigh me down
with her hopes and dreams
on the edge of unbecoming.

I took a walk,
bathed in moonbeams
and later rain,
my motion
an ocean
in the Alabama night.
