Six of them
burrowed in the flesh
of the earth,
trying to hide
from the
high-speed metal horror
and airborne fire agony
of invention.

This is how cave men
use the fires of genius.

The ones who get home
will have joyful strangers
waiting for them.

They will embrace
tense muscles,
numb skin,
and adrenaline.

And the ones
who remain intact
will go on talk shows
like human commercials.

But then most
will be ghosts.
The eerie quiet
of the dinner table.
