Unanswered Prayers 1

She went on a trip with me
to try and outrun
her demons.

I may have had
motives of my own,
but she had
a boyfriend
with the gleam
of paraphernalia
in a wood box
waiting for her return.

I put on an album
about drug use
that I remembered
from years before,
telling her it ended
with the guy
getting clean.

A little bit
of inspiration.

As the album went on,
it slowly came back to me,
and as the last song
was peaking,
she looked at me
from the void
with her eyes wide
in some dust bowl
desperation stare
and said,
“I don’t think he
gets off it,”
as the darkness
swallowed
us.
